Purpose/Abstract

This report synthesizes findings from four studies conducted in different contexts to build a broader understanding of how curriculum-based professional learning can strengthen instructional practice and student learning.

Across the studies, the findings point to the importance of professional learning that gives educators concrete structures for making instructional decisions rather than focusing only on knowledge or general strategies.

The synthesis highlights several approaches that can strengthen professional learning, including coaching routines built around shared tools and improvement processes, structured opportunities for educators to analyze lessons and student thinking, and the use of concrete student data such as work samples, assessments, and patterns in student thinking to inform instructional decisions.

The findings also underscore that context matters. Strategies designed to support equitable mathematics experiences are important, but interventions focused on equity alone do not necessarily produce equitable experiences or outcomes without attention to the broader structures and conditions surrounding implementation.

By examining patterns across multiple studies, the report offers professional learning providers, district leaders, and researchers practical insights for strengthening curriculum-based professional learning and identifies opportunities for future research across contexts.
