Historically, teacher and student voices have not always been front and center in the field of mathematics education R&D; but these voices are absolutely essential for designing tools and practices that will make a positive impact. Incorporating educator and youth voices is imperative both because those groups have a right to have their voices and perspectives influence the spaces in which they live and work, and because it is an “effective practice and policy tool to get things right” for students and teachers.
When teachers and students work in partnership with researchers and have a role in identifying priority issues and designing solutions that fit within their local contexts, educational R&D stands a stronger chance of having a positive impact for students.
