Purpose/Abstract

Coaching definitions and models vary widely across professional learning programs, making it difficult to compare approaches or understand what is most helpful, for whom, and under what circumstances.

This RPPL resource highlights research by Arielle Boguslav that explores the strategies professional learning coaches use and synthesizes them into a clear taxonomy of coaching moves.

The Coaching Moves paper, Parsing Coaching Practice: A Systematic Framework for Describing Coaching Discourse, begins to address these challenges by parsing the concrete details of coach discourse.

The accompanying Coaching Moves Framework extends that research into an accessible tool for professional learning coaches, coaching leads, and practitioners.

The framework is designed to help users reflect on coaching practice, collect data on patterns in coaching strategies, and articulate a shared vision of coaching.

By providing concrete language to describe coaching moves, the framework supports a common language for improving coaching practice and advancing the professional learning field’s understanding of coaching.
